Chapter 1: The Return of the Prodigal Son

Elias Thorne arrived at the family estate, a Victorian monstrosity perched precariously on “Widow’s Peak.” The house had belonged to his father, Thomas, who had spent his final years obsessed with the tides. Inside, the air was stagnant. Dust motes danced in the dim light of his flashlight.

He found the study first. It was littered with nautical charts and lunar calendars. Amidst the debris was a leather-bound journal. The last entry, dated three days before his father’s death, read: It is not the water that drowns them. It is the hunger of the Deep Marrow. Sarah didn’t leave; she was invited.

Elias felt a surge of nausea. That night, the fog rolled in—not like weather, but like a living thing, pressing against the windows, searching for a way in. He heard a rhythmic thumping against the front door. Thump. Thump. Thump. It sounded like a wet heavy bag of meat being dropped against the wood. When he opened the door, there was no one there—only a trail of seafoam and a single, perfectly preserved pearl sitting on the mat.
